Defending against allegations of domestic violence

On Behalf of | Oct 12, 2023 | Criminal Defense

There are certain types of crime that come with a stigma that can impact the accused, even if he or she is not convicted of the crime. Domestic assault is a criminal offense that can lead to complications in multiple areas of a Michigan defendant’s life, including his or her reputation, ability to get a job and more. It is critical for an individual accused of this type of crime to understand what he or she is up against, building a strong defense strategy with which to confront these allegations.

An understanding of domestic abuse

Most people probably associate domestic abuse with acts of physical violence. While there is an element of violence in most of these cases, it is possible that one could still stand of accused of other types of abuse. When preparing an effective defense strategy, it is helpful to understand these categories of abuse, which can include:

  • Emotional abuse
  • Financial abuse
  • Psychological abuse
  • Stalking
  • Isolation

Frequently, an individual accused of domestic violence is also accused of any of the above types of abuse as well. Assault cases can be complex, and they are often based on one person’s word against another.

An effective defense strategy

There is no single best way to defend against domestic assault charges. Whether under investigation or already charged with this type of crime, it may benefit the Michigan defendant to work with an experienced attorney to better understand his or her defense options. An assessment of the individual case can provide insight into how to build an effective defense strategy.
