70-year-old facing drunk driving charges following chase

On Behalf of | Feb 28, 2018 | Drunk Driving

It is never a good idea for anyone to get behind the wheel of a car after having a few drinks. When someone is impaired, there is a greater likelihood of having an accident or causing damage to property. A North Dakota man is facing drunk driving charges, among others, after he allegedly hit a squad car and led law enforcement officers on a low-speed chase.

A car being driven suspiciously was observed on a rural road by officers from the Richland County Sheriff’s Office. Officials identified the driver as 70-year-old man who was supposedly under house arrest. A deputy  attempted to stop the man; however, he continued to drive into a neighboring area. More deputies joined in the efforts to detain the man.

Reports show that a low-speed pursuit continued with the man driving between 15 and 20 mph. The officers used spike strips, which caused the man’s car to have two flat tires. When he finally stopped his car, the sheriff’s officers tried to talk with the man. At that point, the driver reportedly sped away from the scene, hitting the squad car in the process.

The man drove until he reached his residence, where he was shocked with a Taser after he supposedly failed to heed the officers’ requests. He was eventually transported to a local hospital for minor injuries he suffered in the incident. He was later booked into the Richland County Jail on charges of driving under the influence, reckless arrest and fleeing a peace officer. An officer involved in the arrest was also treated and released from the hospital for minor injuries.

Someone facing drunk driving charges should contact a North Dakota criminal defense lawyer at the first opportunity. A trusted attorney can help individuals develop a strong defense to minimize the negative impact on their lives. The defense team will work diligently to protect the client’s reputation and livelihood throughout the legal process.
