An understanding of the crime of drug trafficking

On Behalf of | Aug 17, 2023 | Drug Charges

Breaking the law can come with various consequences that may include penalties such as time behind bars, expensive fines and more. The specific types of consequences an individual could face after a conviction depend largely on the nature of the crime, whether it is a misdemeanor offense or a felony, as well as other factors. For example, the penalties for drug trafficking in Minnesota may be more significant than the penalties for drug possession.

What actions count as drug trafficking?

The crime of drug trafficking involves the sale, transportation or importation of illegal drugs. It is both a felony offense and a federal crime, which means the penalties associated with it are particularly significant. As it involves drugs changing possession and the distribution of illegal substances, it is a more serious offense than just possession. Consequently, the repercussions are more significant.

While each trafficking case is different, this crime can bring consequences that may include three years up to multiple decades in prison. There does not necessarily have to be proof of sale or distribution to be charged with trafficking. A person found in possession of a significant amount of drugs could be charged based on the assumption that he or she is in possession with intent to sell.

Facing these types of drug charges

Drug charges that include trafficking can change the course of a person’s life. If an individual is under investigation for suspected trafficking or is already charged, he or she will benefit from seeking legal guidance regarding defense options. It is critical to take these charges seriously and prepare an effective defense strategy.
