Sheriff of Hennepin Co investigated for DUI crash

On Behalf of | Feb 2, 2022 | DUI

Most people in Minnesota and elsewhere hold law enforcement officials to a higher standard than civilians. Police officers, sheriffs and their deputies have a sworn duty to uphold the law. So, it is always disheartening when a member of law enforcement finds him or herself on the wrong side of the law. Such appears to be the case for the Sheriff of Hennepin County.

Accident and subsequent investigation

Sometime around 2:30 a.m. on Dec. 8, 2021, the Sheriff of Hennepin County was driving along I-94 when the vehicle left the roadway and rolled. Reports state he was taken to a local medical center for treatment of injuries that were not life-threatening. No one else was in the vehicle with him.

Apparently, the Sheriff admitted to drinking before driving, adding an apology to his constituents and supporters for his inexcusable behavior. He also said he would seek help with the personal issues in his life that led him to drink. The Sheriff’s Department and State Patrol are continuing to investigate the incident.

Right to defense

Only time will tell what consequences the sheriff will face after the investigation is over. He may be suspended from his duties and/or face criminal charges in the wake of his decisions to drink and drive. As such, he will rely heavily on experienced defense counsel to help him obtain the most favorable outcome possible. Likewise, those in Minnesota charged with DUI or any other crime should seek the counsel of a criminal defense lawyer to help them protect their rights and liberties and increase their chances for fighting the charges against them.
