Man charged for drunk driving with children in the car

On Behalf of | Apr 10, 2019 | Drunk Driving

A recent two-vehicle accident sent six people to the hospital and resulted in the arrest of one of the drivers. North Dakota officers filed multiple drunk driving charges against one individual, although he is still in the hospital and not yet in police custody. As the investigation continues it is possible that additional charges might still be filed.

According to police, on a recent Saturday night a 31-year-old man got behind the wheel of his vehicle while he was under the influence of alcohol. He had three passengers in his vehicle at the time, including two young boys aged 5 and 7 years old. He was reportedly driving at high rates of speed and behaving erratically when he hit another vehicle on the roadway.

Both of the children in the vehicle suffered critical injuries and had to be taken to the hospital for treatment. The alleged drunk driver, his front seat passenger and the two individuals in the other vehicle were also seriously injured and transported to an area hospital. Police apparently suspected that the driver was intoxicated and sought a search warrant to perform a blood draw. The results of that blood draw were likely a factor in the resulting charges.

The defendants charges are for a DUI with minors in the vehicle and a DUI with a serious injury. These are serious criminal allegations that can lead to severe consequences, including steep fines, lengthy jail time and the loss of driving privileges. Minimizing these types of outcomes in drunk driving cases is often a priority for North Dakota defendants, so taking a timely and careful approach to defense planning is usually a good idea.
