Drug crimes on the rise on North Dakota roadways

Roadways in North Dakota are regularly filled with vehicles traveling for business or personal reasons. Law enforcement officials routinely patrol the roads to promote safety and curtail violations, such as speeding or impaired driving. However, in addition to the usual traffic violations, police officers have recently discovered that drug crimes are becoming more prevalent on state highways.

The North Dakota Highway Patrol has reported that 186 pounds of marijuana valued around $30,000 was found in Morton County. This discovery was just one of many drug busts that have occurred in the area. Officers indicate that the seizures run the gamut from small amounts to large quantities being recovered.

While reports show that there has been an increase in the amount of marijuana discovered, there are other drugs seized as well. Officers report that there have been seizures of methamphetamine and heroin on the roadways. Interstate 94 is a major highway used to travel coast to coast in the country. Officers are being trained in techniques to recognize signs of drug trafficking to prevent usage throughout the state. An increased number of traffic stops are likely in efforts to crack down on drug activities.

Being charged with drug crimes is a serious matter in the state of North Dakota. If convicted, a person could possibly face fines or a significant amount of jail time. However, everyone has a right to present a rigorous defense against the charges. An experienced criminal defense attorney can help clients understand the charges they are facing and what steps to take next. A knowledgeable lawyer will work diligently to minimize the negative impact of the charges on a client's life.
