Man charged with sex crimes for revenge porn

On Behalf of | Oct 24, 2017 | Sex Crimes

Anyone in Minnesota or North Dakota who has ended a relationship knows it can be an emotional and confusing time. After a difficult breakup, it may be hard for some people to cope, especially if the one they loved has moved on with life. When irrational thoughts get the best of someone, it may lead that person to act inappropriately or even dangerously. In some cases, those actions may lead to accusations of sex crimes.

Facing such charges can be life-altering. Even without a conviction, having one’s name associated with the stigma of a sex crime can create many difficulties in life. One Minnesota man pleaded guilty to such a crime under Minnesota’s new revenge porn law. He is now facing four months in jail and years of probation in addition to the limitations his conviction will place on him for the rest of his life.

Apparently, the man created a Facebook account using the name of the man his former girlfriend was dating at the time. With the fake account, the accused allegedly befriended mutual friends of him and his ex. He then began posting intimate pictures of his ex-girlfriend.

During his sentencing hearing, the man insisted he never meant to hurt his former girlfriend. He blamed the fact that he became depressed after their breakup and began drinking. Because of his conviction, he will have on his record one count of felony dissemination of private images without consent.

Revenge porn is a relatively new statutory crime, and there are many elements that must be present to prove it. Anyone accused of sex crimes is entitled to the same presumption of innocence that protects all individuals accused of criminal conduct. Those in Minnesota or North Dakota who are facing such accusations likely have many fears about what a conviction may do to their future. Seeking the assistance of a savvy criminal defense attorney may provide answers and guidance.
