Minnesota man allegedly tried to lure minor to a hotel

On Behalf of | Sep 25, 2014 | Internet Crimes

A 50-year-old man was taken into custody on Sept. 21 at a Bismarck hotel. He reportedly sent nude photographs of himself via email as well as explicit text messages to an officer posing as a 16-year-old girl. The man then reportedly arranged to meet with the undercover officer at the hotel.

According to sources, the man allegedly had alcohol, adult paraphernalia and Viagra in his room when officers arrived to take him into custody. The man faces a charge of luring a minor with a computer, and he was being held on $5,000 cash bond. He was also ordered to have no contact with minors and was prohibited from using the Internet.

Individuals accused of committing illegal acts with a minor could face severe penalties such as long a jail sentence and a hefty fine. Moreover, those who are convicted of Internet sex crimes against a minor may need to register as a sex offender for the rest of his or her life. Therefore, it may be worthwhile to hire a criminal defense attorney to help dispute the case in court.

In a case such as this one, it may be possible to argue that the defendant did not know that the other party was underage. It may also be possible to argue that police committed entrapment, which may lead to the case being dismissed completely. A defense attorney might also be able to negotiate a plea agreement, which may allow an individual to avoid jail time in exchange for community service or probation. In the event that charges are dropped completely, an attorney may file a motion to have the charge expunged from that person’s record.
