Children in the adult prison system: cruel and unusual?

The juvenile justice system exists to handle young people who commit crimes, most of the time with the goal of educating and rehabilitating youth so they can grow up without committing further crimes as adults. In some cases, as in especially violent crimes or homicide, underage children in North Dakota may find themselves facing adult charges. This means that instead of going through the juvenile court system, they will be tried as adults.

Serious penalties often await computer hackers

In today’s high-tech world, there are many opportunities for people to engage in technological crime, from cyberstalking to phishing to identity theft. Computer hacking is also widely known as a crime. Some North Dakota residents, however, may not realize that a number of seemingly innocent computer activities may qualify as hacking, and therefore come with serious penalties.

Is catfishing an Internet crime?

You might be surprised to realize the Internet has been around for a couple of decades already. However, many laws surrounding Internet activity are still changing and evolving in every state, including North Dakota. Internet crime is an aspect of illegal activity never before seen in history. The anonymity of the web also tempts many people to act in a certain way online that they would never do in public. It is possible that you may be committing a crime without knowing that what you are doing is illegal.

Sex offender status attached to some who say they made mistake

Being accused of a sex crime can result in lifelong consequences, even if a defendant is innocent of the charges or if the alleged crime is minor compared to others. These days, there are many ways for North Dakota residents to meet potential dates or sexual partners, from social media profiles to dating sites and online advertising pages. This can make it easier for real predators to find people to prey upon – but it can also make it possible for someone to make an honest mistake and end up facing charges ranging from sexual misconduct to rape.

Underage drinking statistics and guidelines

Most people, including parents, understand that part of being a teenager is testing boundaries and getting into trouble. Teenagers’ antics are harmless enough in most cases, but unfortunately there are instances where young people put themselves and others in real danger. Underage drunk driving is an offense that is taken very seriously in the state of North Dakota, and is responsible for claiming thousands of lives every year across the country.
