North Dakota woman charged with DUI after collision

A 30-year-old woman was allegedly drunk when she crashed her car on Interstate 29 in Fargo on April 13. Authorities said she suffered serious injuries. According to the North Dakota Highway Patrol, the woman was headed northbound on I-29 in a 1999 Lexus when she smashed into the back of a 2003 Honda Accord near the 13th Avenue overpass at approximately 12:30 a.m. The impact forced the Honda into another northbound lane, and the Lexus landed in a ditch. Both vehicles sustained heavy damage.

The driver of the Lexus, a Fargo resident, was transported to Sanford Hospital for treatment of potentially life-threatening injuries. She was not wearing a seat belt. The driver of the Honda, a 21-year-old woman, was not injured in the accident. She was charged with driving with a suspended license.

The Lexus driver was charged with DUI. She had previously been convicted of DUI in Cass County in 2008 and 2010. She was also convicted of DUI in Clay County in 2007.

People who are charged with driving under the influence could face harsh penalties, including lengthy prison terms and steep fines, in the event they are convicted. The consequences may be more severe if the defendant has previously been convicted of drunk driving. Accordingly, one who is in this situation may wish to meet with a criminal defense attorney as soon as possible. Depending on the details of the case, an attorney might choose to contest the accuracy of any field sobriety or BAC tests the defendant was subjected to. In other cases, it may be advisable to negotiate with prosecutors for an arrangement that would involve pleading guilty to a lesser offense in exchange for having the more serious charges dismissed.
