Son of Robert Downey Jr. faces drug charges

On Behalf of | Jul 10, 2014 | Drug Charges

North Dakota fans of Robert Downey Jr. may be dismayed by his son’s recent encounter with the law in West Hollywood. The car in which the 20-year-old was riding was pulled over on June 29, resulting in his being taken into custody. Two additional occupants were in the vehicle. However, they were not detained. The actor’s son is facing drug possession charges for possession of a controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia. Police believed the controlled substance to be cocaine.

Bail was set at $10,250, and Downey was released later that evening. He is scheduled to appear in court on August 29. His father, meanwhile, released a statement in which he thanked authorities for their intervention. He alluded to his own drug challenges, noting that addiction can be genetic and that his own problems could be an issue for his son. His own addiction challenges in the past led to time in jail and loss of acting roles. He has expressed an interest in helping his son to get any needed help.

While his father’s words are hopeful, the younger Downey is facing a serious situation. Public reports do not provide the context for the vehicle being stopped or explain why only Downey was taken into custody. The court might address these concerns when evaluating the case.

A lawyer might assist a young client a similar situation with preparing for an upcoming court appearance. Additionally, the lawyer might also discuss with the prosecution whether a plea deal is possible, especially if a young client has no previous record of drug charges. Enrollment in a substance abuse treatment program at an early age could help prevent future incidents, so the court could consider this as an alternative to jail time.
